Teniola Apata aka Teni Makanaki aka Sugar Mummy of Lagos was live in Winnipeg May 19th, 2019. As a huge fan of her, I’d have to be bias a little bit as the performance was great. Although she arrived later than expected. But I went to the airport with the team to welcome her and later went to the performance in the evening which made up for her lateness in my book.
Some of the artists that opened for her were Bolu Ajibade a Winnipeg favourite or as he liked to be called Sugar Boy of Winnipeg, he sang his single “Omalicha” which the crowd loved. He also sang with Balo on a song he was featured on called “Gimme Love”. Another performance of the night was from Ajadi., I’d have to say his performance was my fav of the night after Teni’s of course. He scared me at first but his whole performance was a vibe. Bringing back the old school Fela type performance.
I was at the front row of the stage which gave me a great view and led to her touching my hand for like a second. She entered with “Wait” a favourite and then went off to Askamanya and then “Sugar Mommy”. I was hoping she’d sing “Fargin or Fake Jersey” but the crowd wants what they want.
Speaking of the crowd, the energy was simply magical and I bet Teni could feel it. The whole club was sold out and screamed every lyric at the top of their lungs. Teni, a role model to some, Sugar Mommy to some simply killed the performance. Her outfit was super simple yet comfortable. She was wearing an Ankara jacket and Pants with Nike Air Max Plus.
